Making The AL MVP Case for Aaron Judge

The AL MVP race looks to be between Aaron Judge and Jose Altuve with Jose Ramirez poking his head in the race. All 3 of these people have strong cases to take home the prize but I believe it should be Aaron Judge.

Now most of you probably just think of the long ball with Aaron Judge but he does much more. Judge has worked the count to orchestrate 127 walks this season which the most in the American League. Judge has a .284 batting average on the year with a .422 on base percentage(OBP) which was 2nd in the AL. Judge also finished with a .627 slugging percentage and 114 RBI’s both were second in the AL. Judge even scored 127 runs most in the AL. Then you add Judge’s AL leading 52 home runs which broke a record for home runs by a rookie that stood for 30 years.

There’s two things that may cost Judge the MVP and it’s July and August. I won’t sugar coat it July and August were a rough two months for Aaron Judge where he only hit .207 and hit only 10 home runs. He also struck out at least once in almost 40 consecutive games. That hurts a lot but that slump may have honestly helped his MVP case because of the way he responded in September and he had a big one. Putting up a stat line of .341 AVG, 15 HR, 31 RBI, he had four 2 home run days. For a guy as young as Judge is to do a complete 180 from slum to stud that fast tells you just how good this guy is.

At the end of the day you can make a case for all three of the aforementioned star to be AL MVP. When you look at the numbers Judge makes a great case but there is one more reason why I think it should go to Judge and it’s Judge’s impact on the Yanks. Without Aaron Judge’s hot start the Yankees wouldn’t have been in the playoff race in July and wouldn’t have traded for Sonny Gray, David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle, and Todd Frazier back in July, In fact they probably would’ve traded Brett Gardner. Without Judge’s hot finish to the year in September the Yanks may be going to Minnesota tomorrow instead of the other way around. As hot as Aaron Judge was in the 1st two months he is that much hotter right now. I can’t tell you who to vote for but I can tell you this Judge is more than deserving of winning AL MVP.
