Ohtani to the Angels

Thought this guy didn’t wanna go to a big market? I guess he didn’t go to the bigger LA team so there’s that argument. He also gets to play under the shadow of the best in the world

and Mike Trout too. I really hope this also means that signing with the Angels, Ohtani will bring more national games for the Angels so I can see plays like this a lot more often.

I guess you can say the Angels have big player appeal? It would be a shame if he didn’t live up to his potential, but then again when has a Japanese player let down fans after they were hyped to be the “Next Big Thing”?

Joe Morgan Wrote a Letter To The Baseball Hall of Fame, Like It’s The 1800’s, About Steroid Users, And Has Transformed Into Abe Simpson

Sit or Start Fantasy Football

It’s always a hot topic with baseball purists, whether or not guys like Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and other noted PED users should be allowed to be enshrined in Cooperstown. Joe Morgan, former second basemen of the Reds during the era of “The Big Red Machine”, thought it was time the voters heard what he had to say, because obviously his opinion means oh so much.

Morgan is quoted in his letter by saying “…it still occurs to me that anyone who took body-altering chemicals in a deliberate effort to cheat the game we love, not to mention they cheated current and former players, and fans too, doesn’t belong in the Hall of Fame. By cheating, they put up huge numbers, and they made great players who didn’t cheat look smaller by comparison, taking away from their achievements and consideration for the Hall of Fame. That’s not right.”

Come on Joe, just because you got the luxury of hitting guys who topped off at 88 mph doesn’t mean that what Bonds, Clemens, etc. did for the game of baseball should have less leverage. Bonds won 3 MVPs before he even got ripped up, the guy is arguably the greatest baseball player of all time.

Bonds supposedly started using after the 1998 season, look at these numbers before he began using, you have an argument that these alone should get him a plaque.

Capture

As someone who grew up watching Bonds, I see more and more players getting into the Hall over him that couldn’t hold a candle to what he did for the game of baseball. Just because Joe Morgan “tied an onion to his belt, because it was the style at the time”, or gave “5 bees for a quarter”, doesn’t take away all the memories these players gave fans. Give them their shine, time to let the best players of a generation into Cooperstown.

The Complicated Yet Simple Case for MLB Most Valuable Player Awards

MVP, Most Valuable Player, the ultimate honor for any athlete to receive in his or her sport. This year, Major League Baseball has not one, but two insane races for the American League and National League MVP Awards.

In the American League, it’s really a two-horse race, with Jose Ramirez just kind of hanging behind. Jose Altuve and Aaron Judge are arguably the two best players in the Majors, so giving the award to just one person is almost impossible. Altuve’s year this year was second to none, slashing .346, and leading the league in hits, while stealing 32 bases, and contributing his 2nd 20HR, 30SB season in a row. Altuve went on to win his fourth silver slugger in a row, and appear in his fifth all star game. Oh, and by the way, he also led the Astros to their first World Series Title. And then there’s Aaron Judge. Coming off of a unanimous Rookie of the Year campaign, Judge led the American League in runs, home runs, walks, and also strikeouts, while slashing a solid .284. After Judge’s scolding hot first half, he tapered off until late August, hitting only .185 in August with 41 strikeouts. In September and October, he came back to his original form, hitting 15 home runs over 27 games, and absolutely raking the ball, hitting .311.

Obviously this decision is not easy, but (even as a Red Sox fan) I would have to give the edge to Aaron Judge. To be frank, Altuve is sheltered in the Astros lineup. With Springer at the top of the lineup, Correa batting behind Altuve, and big bats such as Brian McCann and Evan Gattis lurking deeper in the order, pitchers are almost forced to pitch to Altuve. However, in Judge’s case, the only protection he truly has in his lineup is his counterpart, Gary Sanchez, and SS Didi Gregorius. Judge’s defensive promise and offensive star power lead this to be a complicated, yet simple decision for me.

However, in the National League, things get a lot more difficult. Joey Votto, Giancarlo Stanton, and Paul Goldschmidt basically all deserve the award. Stanton’s league leading 59 HRs and 132 RBIs make it tough not to choose him to win this, but I don’t see him winning it. Paul Goldschmidt is honestly the most consistent player in the major leagues. He is a five tool player with tons of power and contact to all fields. Moreover, Goldschmidt’s base stealing ability and speed are very different from a normal first baseman. A five-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner, and three-time Silver Slugger winner, Goldschmidt may deserve this award, but still, I don’t think he gets it this year. My winner is none other than Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto. Appearing in all 162 games this year, Votto hit a solid .320, with 36 HRs (same as Goldschmidt) and 100 RBIs (20 less than Goldschmidt, and 32 less than Stanton). Votto led the league in On Base Percentage (OBP) and OPS, but perhaps his most eye-popping stat is his strikeout/walk (K/BB) ratio. Votto walked 134 times this year, and only struck out 83 times. That K/BB ratio, .576, is good for the highest since 2011, and ranks among the highest all time. Again, the one difference that separates Votto from Stanton and Goldschmidt is that Votto has no help in that lineup. Stanton has Ozuna, Yelich, and Dee Gordon, Goldschmidt has Jake Lamb, J.D. Martinez, and AJ Pollock, but in reality, who does Joey Votto have? Adam Duvall? Eugenio Suarez? C’mon MLB, this one should be obvious.

MLB Manager of the Year Predictions

The manager of the year vote will be announced today at 6:00. It will be interesting to see who the baseball writers of America will choose as the managers of the year in the American and National leagues. Many teams had great seasons and outperformed preseason expectations.

American League

A.J. Hinch, manager of the World Series champion Houston Astros, is the easy selection. The Astros won the second most games in franchise history, 101, and have had a winning record in the three seasons that Hinch has been their manager.

Even with such a successful season, Hinch will likely loose the manager of the year vote to the manger of the Cleveland Indians, Terry Francona, because the team won an American League-record 22 games in a row.

National League

Torey Lovullo, the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, lead the team to their first playoff appearance since 2011. The team added the Detroit Tigers’ right fielder J.D. Martinez who is a free agent as of the end of the season. Every fan base is hoping they will be the team that signs the 30 year old right fielder. But it will cost them, as the agent that represents Martinez is Scott Boras, an agent who has a penchant for asking for the moon in order to sign any of his clients.

Another candidate is the Dave Roberts, manager of the National League World Series representative, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers were the best team in baseball throughout the season and were expected to win the World Series because they had spent the most money on player payroll of any team. The roster was loaded with talent, most especially their star lefthander, Clayton Kershaw. Justin Turner, third baseman for the Dodgers and Yasiel Puig, right fielder, were also an important part of the Dodgers getting to their first World Series since 1988.

The Red Sox Make My Blood Boil To One Billion Degrees Celsius

Well, one year later same story. The Red Sox get outed by the better team, which was the Houston Astros. But, just because Houston was the better team doesn’t mean they automatically win the first round. This isn’t MLB The Show, this is playoff baseball. Anything can happen at any time if the ball club shows up.

It was too little too late for the Red Sox. They got their asses plugged with the boomstick’s Houston brought in games 1 & 2. Game 3 was a good quality win for the Red Sox. They had the momentum going into game 4, but the Sox we all know and loath showed up and stunk up the joint. The game started out with a small deficit, and a blind umpire – said blind umpire, made a bad call which led to John Farrell getting ejected.

That’s good news, Farrell being out only helps the Red Sox chances. Ya know, just in case he wants to pinch run a knuckle ball pitcher, again. The Sox got unlucky a lot. A lot of hard hit balls went straight to Houston, and Hanley Ramirez missed a moonshot by a couple inches. Coulda, shoula, woulda. Things don’t go your way sometimes in baseball.

The Red Sox went to Sale early in the game when Porcello showed signs of vulnerability. It was a great move. Until it became apparent he was losing steam. He was on short rest, so you can’t throw him for starters innings. His fastball dropped from 99-100 to 95 MPH by the 8th inning. PULL THE FUCKING PLUG. Nope, just like we are all used to seeing, the Sox waited too long to pull the starter and Bregman went deep to tie the game, also leaving runners on base.

On top of that fuck up, they decide to go to Kimbrel in he 8th, he NEVER pitches in the 8th. It usually never ends well when he does pitch in the 8th. Well, he was all over the place like “Wild Thing” Ricky Vaughn was before the glasses (and probably the AIDS)…

Kimbrel sucked, and Beltran got ahold of one to extend the lead to 5-3. The Red Sox had the bottom part of the lineup coming in, with Devers leading off. Devers ends up hitting an inside the park HR to lead off the inning, making it 5-4. No outs, one run game with all he momentum leaning Boston, and Ken Giles starting to tire out. The next 3 batters, Vasquez, Bradley, and Pedroia. All three hitters had a TERRIBLE series at the plate, ZERO pinch hitters were used. It’s incredible how fucking stupid the Red Sox managed their team. They deserved to lose.

But, here I am pissed off once again because our management is incompetent. If John Farrell isn’t fired this offseason Red Sox fans will have to revolt. We should all take a knee for the sake of Boston.

#FireFarrell.

Bason’s Picks MLB Playoffs Edition

The MLB Postseason starts tonight with the Yankees and Twins in AL Wild Card action. Without any further ado here are my predictions

AL Wild Card Yankees def. Twins

The Yankees and Twins kick off the playoffs and in a game where lots of young talent will be on display such as Aaron Judge, Byron Buxton, Gary Sanchez, Miguel Sano, Luis Severino, etc. With Luis Severino on the hill tonight in Yankee Stadium the Yankees should be able to defeat the Twins and move on to Cleveland. The Twins win or lose still made the playoffs one year removed from a 100+ loss season.

NL Wild Card D-Backs def Rockies

Both of these team missed the playoffs last year in fact both teams were in playoff droughts; Colorado hasn’t made it since 2009 and Arizona hasn’t been in since 2011. Arizona only managed a mere 69 wins and now they are coincidentally enough 93-69 this year. As far as the game is concerned the Diamondbacks are entering this game as one of the hottest teams in the majors and should win no problem.

ALDS Astros def. Red Sox 3-1

The Red Sox have won the AL East for the second straight year setting them up for a matchup against the Houston Astros. The Astros have one of the best lineups in baseball anchored by MVP candidate Jose Altuve. The Red Sox have been led by their ace Chris Sale but their bullpen isn’t always consistent which could lead them into a hole against such a deep Houston team.

ALDS Indians def. Yankees 3-0

The Indians were in the World Series last year and are somehow even better this year. The Yankees are team that is seemingly set up for postseason success powerful bats, strong bullpen, improved starting rotation led by Luis Severino. However the Yankees are too young to topple the big bad Indians who are hottest team in the league and firing on all cylinders. Maybe they’ll take a game but that’s a big maybe.

NLDS Cubs def. Nationals 3-2

The defending champs are set to take on the Nationals who somehow better every year. Just remember tho the Nationals always look like contenders going into October but fold like a cheap suit once the postseason starts much like hockey playing neighbors the Washington Capitals. The Cubs are a different team than they were last but maybe just as good. Their starting rotation by Jake Arrieta and Jose Quintana should lead to a return to NLCS for the Cubs.

NLDS D-Backs def. Dodgers 3-2

Remember what I said about the Nationals being the Capitals of the MLB well the Dodgers aren’t much better. While Kershaw and the Dodgers have gotten better in October but still cannot be trusted. The D-Backs have had the Dodgers number all year and while regular season and postseason are different but this is a very tough matchup for the Dodgers. The           D-Backs should be able to keep their wave of momentum going against the Dodgers.

ALCS Indians def. Astros 4-2

Both teams are very deep and this should really be a good one. The Astros appeared to be the best team for most of the year but as of right now the Indians are hotter and maybe even a little better. The Astros will put one hell of a fight but at the end of the day the Indians should be able to pull it off.

NLCS Cubs def. D-Backs 4-1

The Diamondbacks may be one of the hotter teams in baseball on a momentum high from beating baseballs best the Dodgers. The Cubs have one thing the Diamondbacks don’t which is experience. This would be the third straight NLCS for the Cubs and while Arizona would be a tough out the Cubs are more than capable of getting past them.

World Series Indians def. Cubs 4-2

Yes you heard it hear I’m predicting a rematch of last years World Series with a different result; and unlike the NBA this repeat championship series isn’t completely inevitable from day one of the regular season anything can happen in baseball. It seemed like the Indians were on n there way to their first chip since 1948 last year but witg the blown 3-1 lead that narrative quickly changed. The Indians are a better team this year with World Series experience under their belts. While the argument can be made about the Cubs the Indians go into this series with the advantage in the bullpen where they were even in that department last year. This should be a fun one but at the end of the day Cleveland will be celebrating it’s first World Series title in 69 years.

Pablo Sandoval Hit A Walk Off Home Run And It Actually Screwed The Giants Over

CBS Sports:

The Giants went into Sunday’s season finale with baseball’s worst record at 63-98, and the Tigers were right behind them at 64-97. Here are the various No. 1 pick clinching scenarios:

  • Giants clinch No. 1 pick with a loss or a Tigers win.
  • Tigers clinch No. 1 pick with a loss and a Giants win.

What happened Sunday? The Giants won, thanks to Pablo Sandoval’s walk-off home run against the Padres in Game 162 (SF 5, SD 4). Check it out:

As a Red Sox fan, all I can do it laugh. But, at the same time i’m still reminded he wore the Red Sox uniform. It’s an up and down feeling. This is the most Pablo Sandoval moment ever. Nothing like putting a capstone on the trainwreck that was his career, and this Giants team – by screwing them over hitting a walk off homerun.

This entire season was a complete trainwreck for the Giants. A prominent MLB franchise like the Giants won 64 games. That’s fucking horrible. This entire season I never thought they could have been worse than the Phillies. Whoops.

As a Bulls fan, all I have to look forward to is the 2018 NBA draft. If my hopes of Michael Porter Jr got crushed because of a buzzer beater from Jerian Grant I would riot in the streets. San Fran, you can keep Pablo, but I feel for you right now.

ESPN is Garbage and It’s Time To Take Out The Trash

What’s the worst sports network you can think of right now?

I’d be willing to bet you thought of  ESPN. If you did you’re correct, and much like thousands of other sports fans who have also denounced the major network mediums in search of greener pastures. And it turns out you’re in the right place.

ESPNsink

But first, exactly why do we hate ESPN? And why, since we loathe them so much, are they still around in our media lives?

ESPN is severely out of touch with it’s core demographic. We are at the pinnacle of resources and info in the sport’s world, and ESPN is straying away in favor of playing by the “rules” and politicking. Just look at the current catastrophe in their office involving Linda Cohn and Jemele Hill. Regardless of your opinion, it’s hard to ignore the holes in ESPN’s ship.

The graphics, clips and overall display of SportsCenter and ESPN’s social content and online presence are often trashed in online networks for their clunky CGI or irrelevant fact usage.  The personality types we used to love have devolved into low brow character attempts at garnering controversy and clicks. Richard Sherman said what a lot of people were thinking during that outburst at Skip Bayless on First Take in 2013.

Not to mention, everyone in the world is sick of the 24/7 dic – I mean coverage of superstar athletes like LeBron, Steph Curry, Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning. Considering the platform and resources available to ESPN, it’s sad to see they have ridden the same beaten path as most major networks – sacrificing substance for attention and standing for nothing instead of taking chances and challenging narratvies.

SCgraphic

So how can we rid our lives of ESPN and their outdated content?

Well first, you can give your precious clicks and media audience to better providers. Alternative sports media sites like this one are becoming highly credible, are gaining more followers every day, and offer the same facts with better features and content! And if it’s hard info and Fantasy Football you’re into, there are tons of apps for your phone that provide a better service, faster, for free (I personally recommend SleeperBot for the fastest fantasy news).

Listen, delete their apps from your phone, erase the bookmarks from your browser, and turn off whatever awful segment that was playing on their TV station Let’s stop being force-fed this junk every day and do something about it.

Viva la revolución.

Byron Buxton, Its Been Awhile

Let me take you guys back, back to the summer of 2014. Its mid July and I took my vacation to Daytona Beach Florida. Now when most people head down to Daytona they go for the beach or maybe to see Daytona International Speedway or even Bike week, But I went for something else to see the future of my Minnesota Twins play 4 Class A Advanced games.  At the time Byron Buxton mania was here, he was fresh off of hitting .334 with 49 Extra Base Hits and stole 55 bases the year prior, anyone who knew baseball said he was the top prospect in the game. Buxton started 2014 on the DL with a wrist injury and after a slow start he was as hot as the Florida summer. In those 4 games I saw a guy that made me think move over Trout your reign as ALs best is coming to a close.

Just after I left Florida Buxton was Promoted to AA, in his first game he suffered a concussion in an outfield collision with RF Mike Kvasnicka. He only played 31 games in 2014. But amid the lost year Buxton made his MLB debut in 2015 and it went…. Umm…. horribly, he was as overmatched as any 21 year old who skipped AAA would look. That year Buxton hit .209 in 46 games he struck out 44 times to only 6 walks, I thought to myself it was good experience he will adjust this winter an 2016 will be his year. Well… maybe I jumped the gun a bit, Buxton was optioned to AAA in April of 2016. but he came back in late May and ended up hitting .225 with 35 extra base hits still a K/BB ratio of 118/23 in 92 games, the optimist in me said he’ll get better next year, next year is the year, but concern formed in the back of my mind.

April of 2017, Opening Day Byron Buxton is the twins starting CF. Then April 4th to July 4th happened, Byron Buxton played like a Gold Glove CF but at the plate he looked lost. Buxton hit .195 with a K/BB ratio of 82/24, Buxton went though a mechanics change in June and hit just .154 that month.  Those including myself that compared him to Trout, Harper, Lindor, and Correa  looked foolish. The second pick in the 2012 draft was labeled a bust, the most condemning statement in sports. Then (fittingly) on July 4th the fireworks started, since then Byron Buxton has looked like the guy that was everyone’s top prospect, the savior to the Twins franchise, the kid I saw in Daytona Beach Florida in the summer of 2014. Since then Buxton as hit .368 with an OBP of .407 he is 10-10 on steals he has 17 extra base hits including 9 homers 26 RBIs in 42 games with a 4.0 WAR the best  CF for the twins since 2001 Tori Hunter.

So to Mr. Buxton its been awhile,  and to the fans lets enjoy the ride.

Thanks for reading Id like to thank the entire Phade Sports Community for giving me the opportunity to write for you guys.

Why The Yankees need to shut down Aroldis Chapman

Last night Aroldis Chapman was awful and quite frankly it was flat out embarrassing. I mean not covering home plate cmon you gotta be there or at least attempt to be there that would barely be acceptable in high school never mind the big leagues. Plus two people double stole him blind completely embarrassing! His last several outings have been completely unacceptable and it needs to stop now, it’s time to shut him down.

Even if it’s just for a few weeks the Yankees need to do this he has not been the same this year as he was last year. He was good to start the year but ever since he got injured back in May he’s gone way down hill. I personally think he was overworked last October and hasn’t quite yet recovered, plus the rotator cuff may not be 100% either. His speed is still there but his control is completely gone, I have more control than him right now and I’m the worst baseball player alive ask anyone I went to High School with. Right now Chapman needs time to rest his arm and clear his mind because something is clearly wrong.

As for who should take over as closer while there are several options thanks to the Todd Frazier trade I think the Yanks should go with Delin Betances. Have David Robertson be the 8th inning setup and have Tommy Kahnle be the 7th inning guy. I’m not saying keep him off the field the rest of the year but as of right Now Aroldis Chapman should be a pitchers mound anytime soon. The Yanks have a deep bullpen with plenty of options like Chasen Shreve, Chad Green, Adam Warren, even Johnathan Holder who’s in AAA for some reason hopefully he’s back up soon. Please Joe Giaridi listen to me and do the right thing shut him down now.
